Guy Bégin (1947-1987) était professeur titulaire à l’École de psychologie de l’Université Laval.

C’est avec un profond regret que l’ensemble de la communauté de l’École de psychologie a appris le décès de notre collègue Guy Bégin survenu le 22 juillet dernier. Il aurait eu 40 ans le 26 juillet suivant. Professeur titulaire depuis 1984, il était à l’emploi de l’Université Laval depuis 1975.À plusieurs niveaux, Guy Bégin a eu un impact ineffaçable tant à l’École de psychologie qu’à la Faculté des sciences sociales et l’Université Laval. Cet impact se répercutera aussi sur la société grâce aux étudiantes et étudiants qu’il a formé(e)s et aux connaissances nouvelles qu’il a générées. Guy Bégin a toujours été un exemple de travailleur acharné qui s’impliquait avec énergie dans tout ce qu’il entreprenait. Il était un ennemi de la médiocrité. En cette période où plusieurs s’interrogent sur l’ampleur et la nature des fonctions des professeur(e)s d’Université, il n’est qu’à observer ce qu’accomplissait Guy Bégin pour comprendre ce qui constitue la portée et l’importance des fonctions universitaires. Pour plusieurs d’entre nous, à l’École de psychologie, il fut particulièrement émouvant de le voir continuer jusqu’aux tous derniers jours l’exercice de ses tâches d’encadrement et de recherche malgré l’éprouvante maladie qui le minait. Guy Bégin fut un chercheur ouvert, rigoureux et productif. Il manifesta continuellement une forte préoccupation pour les implications sociales de ses recherches. En plus, il a été un formateur d’étudiantes et d’étudiant tant au niveau de la direction de recherches que par le biais de son enseignement. Ce dernier aspect le préoccupait beaucoup. Il avait à cœur de préparer minutieusement ses cours, il les donnait avec dynamisme et se souciait d’évaluer de façon suivie son enseignement. Il était un professeur sévère et exigeant parce qu’il mesurait l’importance de sa tâche de formateur. Cependant, il savait nuancer et pondérer ses critiques et ne craignait pas de renforcer et de faire des louanges quand c’était pertinent. Il ne m’est pas possible de témoigner sur plusieurs autres aspects remarquables qui caractérisaient notre collègue. Mais une chose est certaine : il s’agit d’une personne qui s’est donnée entièrement à la totalité des facettes qui constituent une vie humaine. Quelle que soit notre conception de la vie et de ce qui vient après, Guy Bégin était un témoignage éloquent montrant que la vie vaut la peine d’être vécue, même si elle fut cruellement brève. »
